[Coffee Shop Talks] Our Kids' Reading Habits!

This week's question:
Are your kids avid readers like you?
What kind of books are they reading?

My 6 year old daughter loves to read! She reads all of the time and her genres vary. She loves scary stories, princess stories, sports stories, graphic novels, and everything in between. She even enjoys writing her own short stories. I think she loves reading even more than I did when I was a kid.

My 6th grader hates to read. It's a boring chore and we have to force him to do it. The only 2 series that we have been able to get him interested in are Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Percy Jackson. I can't make him enjoy it, but I'm hoping that when he's older he will find a new appreciation for reading.

I don't have any kids (my fur babies don't read. LOL!), so I can't exactly weigh-in on this week's topic, but I do have a couple of nieces and nephews that I need to buy Christmas presents for so thanks for the recommendations!

Your daughter might end up writing a badass novel someday, maybe as young as 12 like CPaolini!

When I was 4 I remember my mom would put on audio books on tape and I think that's my earliest "reading" memory. My point is, your 6th grader might appreciate audio books better?

Yay that your daughter loves to read (and write)! Keep it up with your son. You're right that a lot of readers found their way to books later on and you never know, something you suggest he try may light that spark :)

One of my fears if I ever have kids is that they won't like reading. Not something you can really control but I think fostering an early appreciation for reading does help. I used to volunteer for a program where I read to a 2nd grader. Hated it the first year but as we went on, I could tell he was getting more into it. It definitely helps to find something that they are interested in reading. We did Wimpy Kid, Harry Potter and comics as well.
