Rellik Bentley is to die for.
He can have any woman he wants and they will do anything to be with him. He uses and abuses them like drugs and tosses them out with the trash. The only thing he gives a f*ck about is his music. That is, until Ella Lighten walks into his life and stumbles upon one of his darkest secrets. In the midst of doing damage control, he begins to obsess over the mysterious woman who wants absolutely nothing to do with him. Rellik won’t take no for an answer.
To say I loved this book would be a vast understatement. This novel is fucking lovely - it's complicated, intense, intelligent and oh-so very dark. Teresa Mummert is a genius and the queen of mind fucking plots.
I love the way this story is told, giving us snippets of both the main characters' pasts. The horror of what they have been through slowly unfolds until you are punched in the gut with hidden truths. I also enjoyed the chapter title words, complete with definitions. The words defined each chapter and had me searching for meaning as I read. The plot is fast moving, not giving too much time to the characters' inner thoughts (thank God). There was a lot of action and the story flowed like lave - hot and steamy, full of danger and living on the cusp of destruction. The plot twists were astounding - there were several bombs dropped and I didn't see any of them coming. And these weren't frivolous plot twists written for the sake of shock. The twists defined the lives of each character, revealing how each person was shaped.
Rellik is my new favorite dark alpha character. So much darkness lies in him, yet the light is there, shining for all to see. He is a comlicated and layered character, hell bent on righting the wrongs of the past. He is sexy and broody, with a side of crazy thrown in for good measure. Rellik lived a difficult life, battling public stigma, family upheaval and an incident that changed the trajectory of his life. He is not an absolute monster- he only wants pay back for all of the severe pain that was inflicted upon him.
Elle also has a tragic past. Her home life was not acceptable and she suffered loss at a young age. However, Elle never forgot her past and she sets out to right all of the heinous things that have been done to her. She has a lot to fight for, and we soon see her inner strength. Her life has been a nightmare and she has spent most of it hiding from the monsters. Rellik may be the title of the story and the photo on the cover, but Elle is a huge driving force in this book. I love her strength and determination and her fight to fix all of her broken bits.
Rellik and Elle together are combustible. They fit one another like two pieces of a puzzle. Both characters have suffered myriad losses of epic proportions, and their souls recognize that in each other. Elle makes Rellik a better man, giving him something to live for. Rellik makes Ella whole, giving her hope. The sex scenes are unbelieveably hot. Sizzling on the pages, Elle and Rellik are a fantastic match.
When I say this book is dark, it is DARK. There are a slew of difficult topics covered in this story. Murder, rape and psychological issues are all included. If any of that is a trigger for you, then don't read this book. I love the darkness and how Mummert wrote each situation. I loved the outlaw vengeance that fills this book. Although these characters are all kinds of fucked up, I fell in love with each and every one of them.
If you are a fan of dark, intense romances, then you will adore this book. If you are a fan of superb writing and plot twists, you will beg for this book not to end. I can only hope that Mummert plans to write about the side characters in this story, because I don't think I've had enough of this amazing world she has created.
