[Review] Black Lies by Alessandra Torre

Brant:  Became a tech billionaire by his twentieth birthday. Has been in a relationship with me for 3 years.  Has proposed 4 times. Been rejected 4 times.  Lee:  Cuts grass when he’s not banging housewives. Good with his hands, his mouth, and his cock. Has been pursued relentlessly by me for almost 2 years, whether he knows it or not.  Go ahead. Judge me. You have no idea what my love entails.  If you think you’ve heard this story before, trust me – you haven’t.

Alessandra Torre has been around for a while, publishing several books.  Although this is the only one I've read so far, I think it's safe to say that I will never miss another booked penned by her.  Black Lies is filled with deception and secrets.  It's written with a subtlety that lulls you into a sense of mystery and then smacks you over the head when the truth is revealed.  It is dark and confusing at times but it's a story that has a lot of heart.  Brant, Lee and Laya are characters that won't soon be forgotten.

Brant is a tech billionaire.  A child prodigy.  A brilliant mind.  A beautiful face.  He has spent his life creating technology and being ushered from project to project by his aunt and business partner, Jillian.  He meets Layana at a charity event.  Layana is an heiress.  She has spent her entire life being told how to act and look.  As soon as she was able to, she cashed in her trust fund and made a life living by no one else's rules but her own.  She was fed up with the aristocracy and determined to not let them rule her life.

The relationship between Laya and Brent develops quickly.  Although Brent is a bit forgetful and he tends to get sidetracked when working on projects, he is the perfect match for Laya.  Laya is very understanding about her man, but instinctually knows that everything is not as it appears to be.  While on vacation, Laya learns her perfect lover's deepest and darkest secret, and then spends years trying to cover it up.  Sometime later, Lee enters the picture.  He is the fire and the passion that Brant is not.  He is the emotion to Brant's cold calculation.  Lee is an easy distraction for Laya as she tried to figure out the rest of her life.  You will hate Laya at times.  You will want to smack her upside her head.  Consider yourself warned.

I can't reveal anything else about this book because it would be a huge spoiler, and trust me, this is NOT a spoiler you want to know.  You want to walk into it blind and react as you turn the pages.  It is a brilliant twist, as is the way in which the secret is handled.  Although I had an idea of what the secret was, I was still blindsided by what occurs afterwards.

The characters in this book are all written with depth and nuance.  Brent is intelligent, yet lacks fire in his soul.  He is vulnerable, yet sexy, and falls very deeply in love with Laya.  Laya is not your typical rich bitch heiress.  She is committed to helping underprivileged youth, and she is no push over.  She is happiness and love with a steel spine.  Jillian is a manipulative mastermind.  When Jillian learns that Laya isn't leaving Brant's side, she switches tactics.  The full knowledge of her treachery isn't realized until the very end of this story.  Lee is the opposite of Brant - cocky and charming.  Oozing sex and dangerous behavior.  Underneath Lee's exterior is a scared and beaten man.  The interaction between these characters is masterful.  You won't want to miss a minute of it!

I highly recommend this story to those of you that enjoy dark and twisty romances.  Do yourself a favor and don't peek ahead!  I loved the plot, the writing and the characters.  Torre really brings it with this standalone novel, and I can't wait to read more from her in the future.

This sounds good, Jamie!

Yes, I heart this hard too! Writing up a review is a challenge because I don't want to turn people off thinking that it's abook about cheating without giving spoilers. I pushed this hard like a drug king pin!

Braine- I'm pushing it, too. I actually don't mind books that involve cheating, but this book is SOOOOO much more than that!
