[Coffee Shop Talks] My Favorite Books Turned Movie!

Sooo.. I initially drew a blank at this question. I know I've seen a lot of movies that I've liked that were based on novels I haven't yet read, but not many of my favorite books have become movie adaptations.

The only one that comes to mind is The Hunger Games. I looooved the book and thought the movie was good. Of course it wasn't going to live up to the greatness of the novel, they never do, but I definitely enjoyed watching it.

One of my all-time favorite books recently became a tv show, Bitten. It's on the SyFy channel and is based on the debut in Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series. I think they did a good job with the casting and I look forward to watching it every single Monday.

My only failure also falls into the tv series category instead of movies and that's True Blood, based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series. I was very much in love with the first two seasons of the show and then it slowly began to slide downhill for me. I love the characters, just not the storylines and I'm not as excited as I used to be when the season premieres.

What about you? Have any of your favorite books become movies? What did you think?

Since we're talking adaptations, I had to throw in the trailer for the next season of Game of Thrones. I haven't read the series but I'm completely obsessed with this show.

True story with True Blood. The first couple of seasons were great. I even thought the spin they put on the maenad was hilarious ("I know that pig!"), but I stopped watching after the Lilith nonsense. It was like they were trying to keep everyone so busy with a billion different plot-lines that no one would have the energy to complain about how far off course they'd gotten.

I did love The Hunger Games movies though. BUT I've been hesitant to watch Bitten b/c I don't think any real, live person could live up to Clayton-Danvers-in-my-head ;)

I didn't realize that Bitten was based on Kelley Armstrong's series...going to have to give that one a shot. I've been resisting watching Game of Thrones since I haven't read the books yet, but I think I'm totally going to cave because it looks just incredible!

As for True Blood. I've done pretty well at keeping the books and tv show separated as two different things and not completely picking about the show since it's so different. But I do prefer if the movie/show at least somewhat follows the plot of the book...this whole Lilith thing? Where did that come from?

You have to watch it, Jessica! Just do what I do and separate the two. There is book Clayton, who is pure perfection, and then there is the cute, lovable TV Clayton. I have to think of it that way so I won't be disappointed =)

Traci - I'm kind of glad that I haven't read the GoT series yet. There have been moments where I have been completely shocked and then when I'm online and see conversations about it, some people are like, "I knew that was going to happen. It's in the books." I prefer the surprises =)

For me I love True Blood more than the books but it has been a flop for me lately. I'm only going to watch the new season because it's the last one. LOL I didn't read the last 3 books in the series. And don't have plans to.

So far I'm enjoying Bitten as much as the book.

The Hungers Games, I've enjoyed books and movies.

Twilight, well they are what they are both movie and books. LOL

I'm currently listening to Divergent and will see the movie on Friday. I'll do a book vs movie review this weekend on them.

I've never read the Sookie books, but I do watch True Blood. I'm kinda happy about that now, because I probably wouldn't like the TV show nearly as much as I do. I can't WAIT for Game of Thrones on April 6th! I've been counting down the days for months now. LOL

Jennifer - How could I forget about Twilight?!? That was one of the cheesiest movies I have ever seen and I should have added it to the list! I really liked Divergent and if I had any free time to go the movies I would definitely see it. I hope you enjoy it.

Carmel - Yay! Another GoT fan! I never thought I would love a show as much as The Walking Dead, but Game of Thrones is the best.

I loved the Hunger Games movie too, and I recently saw The Book Thief, which I thought was a huge success. I don't usually much care for movie adaptations, but there are exceptions, and every once in a while, I actually prefer the movie, but it's rare. True Blood was a huge disappointment for me since it has very little to do with the books.

Oh, how did I miss that Bitten had been made in to a TV show? Gasp, this series is one of my favorites, and I adore Elena and Clay!!!

Hmm I'm trying to figure out which of the ones I've read have been turned. Not too many I don't think. I do enjoy Armstrong's series but haven't seen the tv show. So couldn't watch TrueBlood. I loved most of the books and the show was just so not what I had in my head.

The Hunger Games books are among my all-time favorites. The film of THG was adequate, but I was pleased that Catching Fire was so much better. I've got high hopes for the two Mockingjay films.

Warm Bodies by Issac Marion was both an excellent book and film.
