Book Statement - Tears of Tess (Monsters in the Dark #1) by Pepper Winters

A New Adult Dark Contemporary Romance, not suitable for people sensitive to grief, slavery, and nonconsensual sex. A story about finding love in the strangest of places, a will of iron that grows from necessity, and forgiveness that may not be enough. For their two year anniversary, Brax surprises Tess with a romantic trip to Mexico. Sandy beaches, delicious cocktails, and soul-connecting sex set the mood for a wonderful holiday. With a full heart, and looking forward to a passion filled week, Tess is on top of the world. But lusty paradise is shattered. Kidnapped. Drugged. Stolen. Tess is forced into a world full of darkness and terror. Captive and alone with no savior, no lover, no faith, no future, Tess evolves from terrified girl to fierce fighter. But no matter her strength, it can’t save her from the horror of being sold. Can Brax find Tess before she’s broken and ruined, or will Tess’s new owner change her life forever? I have never done this before, but I feel that this book warrants some sort of acknowledgement.  I would love to do a full review, but with time constraints, and the fact that I am immediately gorging on the second book in this series, I only have time for a quick take on this amazing book.

I picked up this book in between my scheduled reading because I had heard so many things about it.  This was supposed to be a "pleasure" read for me.  I heard it was dark and twisted and a really well written story. Pepper Winters did not disappoint. In fact, it was so good, and refused to leave my brain after completing it, that I felt I had to say something about it.

Reading this book made me feel like I couldn't read fast enough.  I flew through this and was left hungry for so much more.  So many people have said that this book wasn't as dark and twisted as they had hoped.  Pshhhh.  Maybe it's because I haven't read a slew of dark erotic books, but this book was pretty dark and desolate.  There was a lightness to this book, but the dark moments were extremely dark.  There is one scene where main character Tess is strung up and a Russian mobster does something to her that made me actually, physically squirm.

I couldn't take the time to do a full review because I immediately put my other reading on hold so I could read the follow-up, Quintessentially Q.  Tears of Tess is merely the precursor for the total and complete darkness of the series as a whole.  The characters are well drawn, the story line is fast moving, the darkness is enveloping and the writing is beautiful.

If you are a fan of dark, erotic romance, please give this book a try.

I can't tell you enough how much I adore this series. It is dark. It is disturbing. But it's so very, very awesome! QQ is even better than this one.
