[Coffee Shop Talks] Books That Scared Me!

I can't say that I have any recent reads that have really scared me. I'm really not one who scares easily, so it's not very often that I come across a spooky story. Also, there has to be a certain mood and setting for a book to frighten me. It has to be late at night so it's dark and completely silent. It's hard to be scared when you're reading in the middle of the day with kids interrupting you so they can ask questions or when you're reading paragraphs in between cooking. But I have two books that really stand out to me when I think of scary stories and here they are...

The Restorer (The Graveyard Queen #1) by Amanda Stevens

The Restorer was a really creepy tale about a cemetery restorer who could see ghosts. To give you an idea of how spooky I thought this story was, I thought I would share the first paragraph of my review (written in 2011).

"I started this book close to midnight after everyone else was sleeping soundly. Before I reached page 175 I was wide-eyed and listening intently to every strange noise, convinced it was a ghost waiting to suck the life right out of me."

If you love a good ghost story, then you have to read this book.

I Am Legend & Other Stories by Richard Matheson

I Am Legend was scary and had a lot of additional short stories that were really disturbing. I was especially creeped out by "Prey", a tale about a killer Zuni doll that comes to life. I've never been a fan of horror movies featuring dolls because they really freak me out and Prey was no exception. I've heard there was a movie based on three of these short stories. I won't be watching it.

I currently have a giveaway running through the 31st
where I asked participants to recommend a scary story

I love scary stories. I read pretty much romance now but when I first started reading for my own enjoyment I picked up Stephen King's Cujo. That was the first book I read for me. I was hooked and have read so many great books since then. The one that scared me was The Silence of the Lambs...dang that was a good book.

The Restorer sounds great! I was going to add it to my TBR...but look it's already there LOL! Going to have to move that one up a bit :)

I will admit it...I'm too chicken to read anything remotely scary. Sure, I can watch scary movies all day but I can't read them. You're picks sound super creepy to me and I hate dolls! Really, I won't even buy one as a gift for my nieces so there's no way I could read about them. Have a great week. =)
