[Coffee Shop Talk] Do You Read Outside Your Genre?

There are a couple of reasons why I read outside my main genres. Mostly I just like to shake things up a bit when I feel myself getting a little bored with the fantasy and sci-fi genres I read. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes (especially with urban fantasy) I start to feel like I'm reading the same thing over and over again.

Another reason I read outside my genre is recommendations. If I'm recommended a book from a reader I trust or I see my GR friends giving rave reviews to a story that I wouldn't normally pick up, then I'll give it a try.

Stories in the young adult and new adult categories used to be outside my genre. If I hadn't decided to try something new, I would be missing out on a lot of truly awesome reads.

Recent reads outside my genre that I would recommend:

I read outside of my genres to help break reading slumps and I don't normally review these books so it helps to take the pressure off having to write a blog post as well. Blogging can be stressful at times so it's important to read for fun every now and then.

I try to read a variety of books. So yes I do occasionally read outside my genre.

I do read outside my genre. I have lots of moods so it just depends on what I feel like. It's also nice to switch it up once in a while. I totally agree that if I read too much UF, they all start to blend together.

I like reading PNR the best, but every once in a while I love reading a historical NF book - I read two last year - once about the super volcano Krakatoa, and another about penal colony immigration to Australia - not anywhere near PNR, but the subjects were fascinating.

I used to strictly read literary fiction...and then came Twilight. Since then, I read pretty much anything and everything. Although I seem to go in phases - reading primarily one genre more than others.
