[Shadow Hunter Blog Tour] Review & Interview with Kait Ballenger!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to answer a few questions about your new series, Execution Underground. For those who haven't heard, can you tell us what the E.U. is all about?

Thanks for having me! The Execution Underground is an international covert organization of supernatural hunters who fight to protect humanity. The organization is comprised of a main headquarters with divisions in many major cities all around the world. The series focuses on the six hunters who make up the Rochester division of the Execution Underground. Each hunter has his own supernatural specialty and it’s an all male organization.

Your leading female character in Shadow Hunter is a badass and the next character in Twilight Hunter is described as an alpha female. How important is it to have a strong female lead to compliment your heroes?

It’s extremely important to me—crucial really. My biggest pet peeve when I’m reading is a really great book, particularly ones that have strong alpha heroes, is when they’re paired with a weak or whiny heroine.  Unfortunately, that’s something I notice rather frequently in the paranormal romance genre, so when I decided I wanted to write paranormal romance, I told myself I wasn’t going to fall into that trap. I think it happens with a lot of authors because it’s easier to make an alpha hero seem super powerful if the woman next to him has no power, but I think a true alpha male in romance is better earned when he’s paired with a heroine who challenges him. I strive for my paranormal romance heroines to have the strength and abilities of what you would normally find in an urban fantasy heroine while still making them realistic and have vulnerabilities.

What made you decide to transition from young adult urban fantasy to adult paranormal romance?

It wasn’t so much a transition as it was a shift in what genre I was focusing my energy on. I still write YA urban fantasy under my maiden name, Kaitlyn Schulz, and I actually have a YA urban fantasy series about to go out on submission at the publishing houses, but since I wasn’t having much luck finding an agent with my work in that genre, I decided to try my hand at writing the other genre I love to read: paranormal romance. Things just blossomed from there.

Shadow Hunter ended with a surprising twist. When will we learn what happens next with Tiffany and Damon?

Damon and Tiffany will have a full length book all to themselves that finishes up their story later on in the series, book six, tentatively titled Dark Hunter. In the meantime, you’ll see Damon appear in all the other books throughout the series as a side character, since he’s the leader of the Rochester division—though his character in those books is very different from in the prequel, which readers of the Shadow Hunter will understand why. Readers will be able to get small clues as to what’s going on with him and Tiffany throughout the series.

We love recommendations! Can you share with us your favorite UF or PNR reads so far this year?

I don’t have much time to do a lot of reading outside my graduate school homework, but I recommend any of the books in the Transplanted Tales series by Kate SeRine and the Weird Girls series by Cecy Robson. I finished Kate’s second book, The Better to See You, a while back and loved it, so I’m dying to read the next book, which releases in August, Along Came a Spider. I also just started reading the second book in Cecy’s series, A Cursed Embrace, which is amazing thus far! I highly recommend both series, which are urban fantasy with strong romantic elements.

Thanks again, Kait! I enjoyed my first experience with the Execution Underground and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for hosting me!

Shadow Hunter, the Execution Underground prequel, is a great introduction to Ballenger's new paranormal romance series.

With a badass name like Execution Underground, you have to deliver characters who are equally as badass and that's what this author does.

The tortured hero, Damon, is a hardened man who alternates between being angry and turned on as he battles his need for revenge with the need to claim the woman he desperately wants.

Tiffany is just as consumed by revenge as Damon, and this driving need brings them together to try and take down the vampire responsible for destroying their lives. But she has difficulty resisting Damon's allure. She tries to push aside her feelings for him and concentrate on the job while also dealing with his overprotective attitude toward her.

The story ended with a wicked twist that I didn't see coming and I can't wait to read about what happens next. If you're a fan of paranormal romance, then you'll want to check out Kait Ballenger's new Execution Underground series.
