Not to mention, every second she spends with Luke makes it harder to leave. With Luke, Tiffany is almost ready to forget about work.

Enrique swears he’s only interested in the person she is today, but their relationship is tested when her ex-husband’s drug dealer attacks her, looking for money. With no options and a money hungry drug dealer on her back, Kammy accepts a position as a dancer at a strip club. But when Enrique shows up at the club, their relationship is over. With no reason to stay in Texas anymore, Kammy auditions for the Bolshevik Ballet and gets the opportunity to go to Russia. Only Enrique is determined to stop her.

reating believable characters requires two things: backstory and motivation. And those two things play into each other. The backstory is most likely why your character is the way he/she is, although sometimes a really amazing character can come out a certain way in spite of their backstory. But even then the backstory most likely in some way contributed to their personality/or behavior today. Daughters of teen mothers statistically become teen mothers, so a daughter of a teen mother who beats the statistic has done this in spite of her backstory. But things that happened during her life at home with her mom, may have caused her to resolve she wouldn’t be a teen mother. In that case, her backstory still played a role in who she is today, even though she became this person in spite of her backstory. And this example is perfect, because you can see how the backstory served as her motivation. nce you’ve created a solid backstory, you’re half way there. But your character’s present actions and dialogue need to be equally well motivated. In The Other Marlowe Girl, there is a scene where Kammy goes to sleep in her niece’s toddler bed. Her legs are hanging over the edge, so she doesn’t get much sleep. In most situations, we would roll our eyes and call Kammy dumb. But she’s doing this because a drug dealer has found out where her sister lives, and Kammy is the only one who knows about it. She’s sleeping in the baby’s room to protect her in case her stalker shows up. Not only are we okay with this, it helps us like a character who has made some mistakes. How can you hate someone protecting a baby?
