I didn't think that I could love any rich bad boy as much as I loved Rush Finley, but I was wrong. Although Woods Kerrington is a completely different type of hero than Rush, I love him just the same. This story about Woods and the very damaged Della Sloane had me flipping the pages at warp speed.
First off, Woods is not what I expected. When we met Woods in Fallen Too Far and Never Too Far, we did not get the complete picture of him. Where he was protective and sweet towards Blaire, we didn't see inside his mind. I was not prepared for how sexually raw Woods mind is. He is much more sexual overt in his thoughts and in his deeds than I imagined.
I looked back at his big fancy truck. It was all shiny and black. It fit him and his tall, muscular body, olive complexion and dark hair. He was one of those sexy, beautiful, dangerous ones.
Della Sloane has a desperate and damaged past. She has lived through a version of hell and has left home in order to see the world and discover who she truly is. Della and Woods meet by chance and have an amazing one night stand. Although both think it was a one-and-done type of thing, they immediately feel a greater connection to one another. When circumstances bring Della back to town, and into Woods' country club, sparks begin to fly. However, there is the one small problem that Woods' family expects him to marry a spoiled, cold woman that will bring the Kerrington family additional prestige.
"Sometimes our imperfections are what makes us special."
Woods has his own issues to deal with. Although he does not suffer from the mental anguish that Della deals with, he struggles with the cage his father puts him in. Woods' parents are not good people - they want him to marry for business, not for love, and he is basically bribed with his family's company. Woods knows early on that he's not willing to sell his heart, but his family makes things very difficult for him. Woods deals with the pressures of family and society. He is at odds with how he wants to live his life and how others want him to live his life. Towards the end of this story, Woods' father does something so heinous that I wanted to jump into the pages and slap him myself.
"But you...you have no fucking clue how unbelievably beautiful and desirable you are. You're not calculating and selfish. And you make me want to be better."
Della embarks on her own journey in this book. Not wanting to cause problems for Woods or any of the people she meets, she tries to keep her head down and do her job, planning on skipping town as soon as she makes enough money to travel. Woods makes leaving very hard for Della. He makes her reevaluate how she views herself and question what she deserves out of life.
Woods made me whole. He healed everything that was wrong with me.
I loved the Woods - Della dynamic. The sex scenes were hot and frenzied, while the emotional development was slow and sensuous. This book ends on a cliff hanger, so be forewarned. It's not as nasty a cliff hanger as we've seen from Glines in the past, but it raises some serious questions about how Della and Woods will move forward. Woods and Della are a combustible couple, and they had me interested in their lives from start to finish. We even saw glimpses of Blaire and Rush, although there were not major characters in this book.
The writing and action in this story are well paced. Although I saw how despicable Woods' parents were, I did not see the end coming. I was surprised by not only the actions of Woods' morally bankrupt father, but by the cliff hanger that follows. Glines excels in writing juicy, complicated romances.
I was captivated by this story set in the Fallen world of rich, young, beautiful people and damaged, unstable characters. I can't wait to read more. Abbi Glines has a gem with this series making me want to read about every character in this delicious world she has created.
