Graphic Novel Review: Scarlet by Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev

Release Date: July 20, 2011
Published by: Marvel/Icon Comics
Source: Received as gift

This is the comic experience of the year! The first creator-owned series by one of the most successful teams in all of modern comics. Scarlet is the story of a woman pushed to the edge by all that is wrong with the world...A woman who will not back down...A woman who discovers within herself the power to start a modern American revolution!!

Now I understand all of the hype surrounding this graphic novel and I would definitely say that it's well deserved. The gripping story line, the gritty artwork and the narrative that speaks directly to the reader all made for a fantastic novel that is easily my top illustrated read of 2012.

The story follows Scarlet, a young woman who has recently overcome a devastating tragedy, as she seeks vengeance against the man responsible for destroying her life. It all leads to a sequence of events that sparks the beginning of a revolution.

No longer able to stand by and let those with authority take advantage of the people that they are sworn to protect, she sends a powerful message and everyone is forced to listen.

It's not exactly easy to look up to Scarlet. Even though she demonstrates bravery, is screaming for justice, and wanting to right what is wrong with the world, her methods are questionable. No matter how justifiable she may believe her actions to be, there is still blood on her hands. But the story wouldn't be as intense and captivating without her drastic, merciless actions.

It seems as if the novel ends just as Scarlet's journey is truly beginning and I can't wait to see where Bendis & Maleev plan to take this next. Although I've heard that the release date continues to change, I'm hoping to get my hands on issue #6 soon.
