The Secret of Ella & Micha was a lovely surprise for me. I saw a blurb about this book on GoodReads and thankfully decided to give it a try. At the cost of $.99 for Kindle or Nook format, I figured I couldn't go wrong. What started out as a quick, low-cost read turned into one of the best New Adult books I've read. With layered characters with tragic backgrounds, this book had me hooked from the very first page.
We first meet Ella and her roommate at college as they are preparing to head to Ella's home town for the summer. Ella seems like a perfectly normal college girl who likes to study hard and has a talent for drawing. We learn quickly enough that Ella is hiding some very big and dark secrets from her past. The Ella that we first meet is wearing an almost unbreakable mask to hide away the real Ella. When Ella left for college, she didn't tell anyone where she was going, including her lifelong best friend, Micha.
"That's not what this is. This is you running from life and you can't control everything. Even if you want to." His words send a chill through my spine.
When we meet Micha, we learn that he has been searching for Ella since she left home. Micha is sexy and sweet, with a bit of an edge. He likes fast cars and playing his guitar. He also has a soft spot for Ella - his best friend and the only girl that has ever broken his heart. Micha seems like a nice, normal guy in a dead end town. We learn throughout this book that Micha has a few dark secrets of his own that he must learn to deal with before he can be the man that Ella needs him to be.
"Yeah, pretty girl, stay a little longer." He's so close that the heat of his body kisses my skin and my insides tremor. His fingers comb through my hair as he whispers, "You smell so good. God, I've missed your smell."
Once Ella returns home, it takes a long time for Micha to break through the mask she has put in place. He does everything he can think of to get the "old" Ella back, from using his sexy charm, to understanding her when no one else in the world does. We learn the tragic backstory of Ella as this book progresses, and it's a doozy. Sorensen does an excellent job of making Ella's pain feel real to the reader. Ella spends a good chunk of this book fighting her feelings for Micha, and it turns into a game of cat and mouse that had me flying through the pages.
He said just kiss and it seemed okay, but now my body has developed a mind of its own. I'm writhing my hips against him enjoying the pleasure erupting inside me. He's hard between my legs as he kisses me so fiercely that my lips are swollen...My head falls back and my eyes open to the stars shining in the sky. It feels like I'm falling or flying. I'm not sure, but whatever it is, I can't seem to control it.
The side characters in this story are excellent, as well. We meet Ella's roommate and college BFF, Lila, who seems like a spoiled princess from a well-to-do family but is hiding a secret of her own. She turns out to be a spitfire and a great friend to Ella. Micha's best guy friend, Ethan, also had me intrigued. We don't learn a lot of his story, but the third book in this series will focus on Lila and Ethan and I can't wait to read more about these two. We also meet Ella's brother and her father, as well as Micha's mother and father. Let's just say that it's a good thing that Ella and Micha have such good friends, because their families leave a bit to be desired.
This book ends with a definite solution to Ella and Micha's problem. There will be obstacles up the road for these two, but this is a couple that I would root for no matter what. The Forever of Ella and Micha is scheduled for release in November 2012, and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. Sorensen has created multi-layered characters and a knock-out story that will keep you on your toes! If you are a fan of messy, college relationships, and dark and tragic pasts, this is definitely a do-not-miss series for you. **This book is recommended for 17 + years old due to the mature content that includes sexual situations and some language. **
Hearing him say that makes me feel better and I start to face the inevitable. I can run all I want and try to shut myself down, but my feelings for Micha will always be there - they control me.
