Attorney Lys Fensic has spent her life controlling a psychic power that kills. Her ability to lock herself down falls apart when her ex, a mage, sends enslaved demons to kill her. In a psychic free fall, she turns to tough guy Telos Khunbish for help. But is he a mage as she’s always suspected or is he something far more dangerous?
From the Author: Free Fall is set in the My Immortals series world where demons and magic-using humans called the magekind are not quite getting along. Most people have no idea they’re living in what amounts to a magical war-zone. Free Fall is based on the short story Future Tense but is considerably expanded and includes scenes that were censored from the short story. This novella is about 35,000 words (130 pages)

Review: This novella is set in a world where shifters, mages and demons co-exist. Lys Fensic is an attorney who has destructive psychic powers that she can barely control. In the beginning of this book, she has just broken up with her mage boyfriend, Michael, who is the epitome of evil. He wants Lys dead and sends an array of dangerous demons to kill her. Lys must leave her line of work because the demons have attacked her in the midst of innocent people, and for protection, she turns to professional tough guy and computer hacker, Telos Khunbish.
She gave him a once over. Khunbish was a physically solid man. Tall. Muscular. Fit. If he wanted to, he could hurt her worse than Michael. That was the thing about men. Until you knew what was in their hearts, every single one was a potential danger.
Telos just so happens to be a demon, himself, and can change from his physical manifestation into his demon manifestation when he needs to. The demons like Telos live in a world where they are loyal to one demon who is powerful enough to take care of his people. One of Telos' leader's rules is to not injure any mages. So Lys and Telos head off on an adventure to either disable Michael or to get Lys to safety. Michael sends demons after these two, and a few times Lys and Telos are close to being overwhelmed. Telos is able to move Lys back to his own house where he can keep her safer until his leader, Nicodemus, gets word of her situation and involves himself.
There is an immediate attraction between Lys and Telos which is taken to the next level once they arrive at his house. However, Lys is apprehensive about having sex with Telos. Due to her destructive psychic powers, Lys has never been able to actually let go and enjoy herself in any way, for fear that her abilities will hurt someone. When she does finally let go, she has an explosive experience with the hunk, Telos.
"Here's the thing, Fensic. You don't need to worry about control with me. Because I am not human. I can keep your magic locked up tight while I do you any way you like it." He smiled. "I like it dirty. How about you?"
After an onslaught of demons attack Telos' house, the two lovers are able to get the help that they need from Nicodemus. There are a few surprises, and the passion runs hot. In the end, Lys has to decide where her loyalties lie and how she is going to live the rest of her life. Telos is very much involved in the ending and makes her an offer she cannot refuse.
All in all, this was a quick, smutty read. And I mean "smutty" in the best possible way! I have not read any other books in this series, but after reading this novella, My Immortals has been put on my TBR list. As much as I enjoyed the actual plot of Lys being hunted by Michael and Telos working to keep her safe, I must say that the sexy times were hot and kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed this novella very much and can't wait to read more from Carolyn Jewel!
