Review: Soulless The Manga Vol. 1

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Or will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?
The Parasol Protectorate (Manga) (Book 1) | March 1 2012 | Yen Press | Gail Carriger (author) | Rem (illustrator)

A must-read for any fan of the Parasol Protectorate series.

This lovely manga adaptation follows Carriger's Soulless debut perfectly, highlighting all of the events of the novel that I enjoyed the most. There was plenty of action to keep me entertained and enough romance between Alexia and Lord Maccon to keep me satisfied.

The artwork is outstanding and I enjoyed seeing the charming Lord Akeldama, Alexia's lovely dresses, Ivy Hisselpenny's outrageous hats, and plenty of naked Conall Maccon.

It was, quite simply, fantastic!

If you enjoy Carriger's stories and the spectacular characters that she's created, then I guarantee you'll enjoy this first volume of Soulless: The Manga.
